Need a Vet Fast? PetMed of Key West Offers Same-Day Urgent Pet Care
Pets have an uncanny ability to develop a limp, an upset stomach, or a mysterious “something’s off” feeling at the worst possible time — often when your day is already packed.
At PetMed of Key West Veterinary Clinic, we plan for that.
That’s why we intentionally hold same-day urgent and acute care appointments during regular business hours for pet health issues that shouldn’t wait — but also don’t require a 24-hour emergency hospital.
What “Urgent Care” Means at a Veterinary Clinic
Urgent care lives in the middle ground. It’s not a life-threatening emergency, but it’s also not something that should wait days to be addressed.
Common reasons we see pets urgently include:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Limping or sudden pain
- Scooting or excessive licking
- Eye squinting, redness, or discharge
- Cuts, wounds, or hot spots
- Coughing, sneezing, or mild breathing changes
- “They’re just not acting right” (yes — that counts)
If you’re worried enough to call, it’s worth a conversation.
We Hold Same-Day Appointments — On Purpose
Every day, we reserve:
- Several same-day illness appointments
- Two same-day acute care visits
These appointments are built into our schedule specifically for pets that need to be seen today, not next week.
Because these slots are limited, they often fill by late morning (around noon). Calling earlier in the day gives us the best chance of getting your pet in.
Who Can Use Same-Day Urgent Care?
We do our best to help both current and new clients, depending on availability.
- Current patients: We prioritize continuity of care and will work hard to see urgent issues the same day whenever possible.
- New clients: We frequently accommodate same-day urgent visits when schedule space allows.
If a case is more serious than we can safely manage during regular hours, we’ll clearly explain next steps and help guide you to appropriate emergency care.
Important Clarification About Emergencies
Same-day urgent care does not mean overnight or 24-hour care.
PetMed of Key West:
- Is a general practice veterinary clinic
- Is not a 24-hour emergency hospital
- Is not staffed overnight
If your pet has a true emergency that requires continuous monitoring, advanced intervention, or overnight care, we will recommend referral to a dedicated emergency hospital outside the Dubuque area.
When possible, we’re happy to help stabilize your pet during business hours and guide you through that transition.
What Should You Do If Your Pet Needs Care Today?
- Call us as early as possible at (563) 583-8387
- Tell our team what’s going on — they’ll help determine urgency
- If we have a same-day slot available, we’ll schedule it
- If not, we’ll talk through safe next steps and alternatives
If you’re unsure whether something is urgent, that’s okay — part of our job is helping you decide.
The Bottom Line
Pets don’t follow calendars, and neither do illnesses or injuries. By holding same-day urgent and acute care appointments, we’re able to help many pets get timely care without unnecessary ER visits — while still being honest about when referral is the safest option.
If your pet needs to be seen today, call early. We’ll do everything we can to help.
