Why Vaccines Sometimes Cause Mild Effects
Vaccines work by safely teaching your pet's immune system to recognize and fight specific diseases. As the immune system responds and builds that protection, it's normal for some pets to feel a little "off" for a short time. It's much like the way some people feel briefly tired or sore after their own vaccinations.
These mild effects are a sign your pet's body is doing exactly what it should. They pass within a day or two.
What's Normal After Vaccination
Most mild reactions are short-lived and resolve on their own within 24 to 48 hours. It's common and usually nothing to worry about if your pet shows:
- Mild tiredness or low energy
- A slightly reduced appetite
- Mild soreness or tenderness at the injection site
- A small, firm bump at the injection site
- A mild, brief low-grade fever
- Wanting to rest and be a little quieter than usual
The kindest thing you can do is give your pet a calm, comfortable space to rest, fresh water, and a little extra quiet. Most pets are back to their usual selves by the next day.
How to Help Your Pet Feel Comfortable
There usually isn't much you need to do, but a little extra care goes a long way:
- Provide a quiet, comfortable place to rest
- Keep fresh water available
- Offer their normal food, and don't worry if their appetite is slightly down for a meal
- Keep things calm and skip intense exercise for the rest of the day
- Gently monitor the injection site
- Don't give any medication unless we've recommended it
Never give human medications to your pet on your own, as many are toxic to dogs and cats. If you think your pet needs something for discomfort, call us first.
